RPV, RIV or RCV — which valve does what
Three valves, three quite different jobs, and one decision you have to make with a ruler in your hand before ordering anything.
Start with how many holes your wheel has
This is the one question to settle before choosing, because it rules out half the options. Off-road wheels are sometimes drilled for two valves: one in use, the other plugged or carrying a pressure sensor. Two holes opens the door to the RIV. One hole leaves the RPV or the RCV, and there is nothing to deliberate.
The second measurement matters just as much and gets skipped just as often: the depth of the valve stem well. It depends on rim width, offset and model, so it does not follow from tyre size. The manufacturer makes the RPV in a standard and an XL length and flatly refuses to guess — measure before you order.
RPV — deflation you can aim
The Rapid Precision Valve replaces the factory stem. Unscrew the cap, put a gauge on, slide the gate open and watch the needle fall. Close it exactly where you want — hence the 'precision', because this is not poking the pin with a stick and counting to thirty.
The manufacturer's figure: a 35-inch tyre from 35 to 10 PSI in under fifteen seconds. In practice you do four wheels in the time one used to take, and they all finish on the same number.
The valve is patented and also comes in XL for deeper valve wells. A seal rebuild kit exists, so years later you replace seals rather than the whole valve.
RIV — ten-second inflation, but not in every wheel
The Rapid Inflate Valve goes the other way: a large-bore inflation valve with virtually no pressure drop across the Schrader. On a shop compressor at 120 PSI and 10 CFM the manufacturer quotes a 37 to 39 inch tyre inflated in under ten seconds.
There is one catch and it is fundamental: the RIV only works in wheels with two valve holes. The second hole keeps a normal stem or the TPMS sensor, because you cannot deflate through an RIV.
There is a side effect that gets little attention: with no narrow throat to push air through, the compressor runs cooler and for less time. On cheap on-board compressors that genuinely extends their life.
RCV — the compromise for people who will not dismount tyres
The Rapid Connect Valve does not replace the stem; it screws onto it once the core is out. Fitting four takes five minutes and needs no tyres off the rims, which the RPV and RIV both do. A core tool and a 'time to deflate' decal come in the box.
The manufacturer says plainly that it is not as fast as an RPV. It is still far faster than anything factory, and it stays on the wheel permanently.
One thing before fitting: look at the tips of your valve stems. The RCV seals on the face of the stem, and if that face is nicked or uneven it will leak. The manufacturer suggests flattening it with a fine nail file — it sounds odd, it works, and it is better done before than while hunting a leak afterwards.
What not to buy together
There is no point putting an RPV and an RCV on the same wheel — they do the same job, mounted differently. An RIV and an RPV do pair up, but only in a two-hole wheel: one valve to inflate, one to deflate.
Choose the gauge separately, according to what you tow. The 40 PSI version is calculated for low off-road pressures and has its best resolution there. For trailers and higher load-range tyres take the 90 PSI version, since you will not be going below forty anyway.
Common questions
Do APEX valves work with TPMS sensors?
Yes. There is a dedicated TPMS adapter kit and a standard mount for the RPV. With an RIV the sensor stays in the second hole, since the RIV is inflation-only.
Four valves or five?
Five if you carry a full-size spare and want the same valve in it. With a spare hanging on the tailgate you usually keep higher pressure in it anyway, so four is enough.
Can these be fitted without dismounting the tyre?
Only the RCV. The RPV and RIV replace the factory stem, which means breaking the bead. If you happen to be changing tyres, that is the moment to do it.
