JL and JT steering — why it fades and what to do

The symptoms of an overheated system, the fix order from cheapest to dearest, and the axle check that saves you a costly return.

01

Symptoms every JL owner on big tyres knows

The wheel goes heavy after prolonged parking manoeuvres or a run of tight turns off-road. Sometimes assistance disappears for a second and comes back. In winter the same can happen straight after moving off, before the fluid warms up.

This is not a fault in the ordinary sense but a system working at its limit. The factory electric pump in the Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT was sized for the tyres the truck leaves the line with. Fit thirty-sevens, a heavier bumper and a winch and the torque needed to turn on the spot rises, and with it heat the factory cooling has no way to shed.

02

Fix order, cheapest first

Step one is the cooler. On its own it removes most cases of momentary steering dropout, because the problem is temperature rather than a lack of power. More fluid volume and more surface area keep the system in a sensible range. It mounts almost anywhere with airflow.

Step two, if force is still short when turning on the spot, is the STEERING BOOST kit. It retunes the factory blow-off valve and raises working pressure, adding around forty per cent more force. It does not replace the pump — it uses headroom the manufacturer left alone.

Step three is the TSR, adding a hydraulic assist ram. That is for trucks running rock on forty-inch tyres and above, and it is priced accordingly.

03

Why BOOST does not work without the cooler

Because forty per cent more pressure means proportionally more heat into the fluid, and the starting point was already tight. The manufacturer frames this not as a suggestion but as a condition: the kit is to run with a cooler. Buy the kit alone and sourcing and fitting a compatible cooler becomes your job.

In practice we sell the two together and advise against other configurations, because skipping the cooler does not make it work worse — it just gets you back to the same overheating you started with, faster.

04

The check that saves an expensive return

The TSR fits the wide M210 front axle only, the one from Rubicon and XR models. It does not fit the narrow axle in Sport, Sahara and non-XR Willys, and no adapter gets around that.

Checking takes a minute: the trim from the registration document, or measuring the flange spacing. If in doubt, send us the VIN and we will check before you order anything.

The ram itself has a shaft running right through and a diameter chosen so the factory pump keeps up with flow demand. That matters, because added hydraulics often introduce a lag between the wheel and the wheels; here the whole thing was calculated together with the factory pump precisely to avoid it.

Questions

Common questions

Does the BOOST kit void the vehicle warranty?

Touching the steering system is a modification, and in a dispute a dealer may point to it for a fault in that system. It has no bearing on other components. Worth weighing up if the vehicle is still under factory warranty.

Are fluid and a cooler enough?

In most cases yes, if the symptom is momentary dropout once things get hot. If force is short from the first minute of driving, a cooler will not fix that.
